   Sinana Agriculture Research Center

Establishment

Sinana Agriculture Research Center is one of the centers working under Oromia Agricultural Research Institute. It is located in the Bale zone of Oromia Regional State, 463km away from Finfine and 33 km away from Robe town. Its geographic location is 070N07’N latitude and 40010’E longitude. The center was established in May 1896 by the agreement signed between the Ethiopian government and the European Economic Commission (EEC) to represent the highlands of the southeastern agro-ecologies of the country.

The elevation of the center is 2400 m a.s.l. with topography of gentile slope to plain. Accordingly, there are two distinct seasons favorable for crop production, namely, the Genna season usually extends from March/April to July/August, while the Bona season extends from August/September to December/January with annual rainfall of 860mm. The average annual maximum temperature is 210C and the minimum is 9oC.

Mandate area of Research

So far, Sinana is doing research in three different Zones under oromia regional states. These are Bale zone at Sinana, Goba, Agarfa, Dinsho, Gasera, Goro, Dellomena, Harana Buluk, and Barbere districts, East Bale at Gololcha, Ginir districts, and West Arsi Zone at Adaba and Dodola districts.

The center is mandated to:

  • Identify and prioritize major agricultural production constraints and potentials of farming system in various agro-ecologies of Bale, East Bale and West Arsi Zones.
  • Develop and release/recommend field, horticultural and forage crops varieties with good nutritional quality, high yielding potential and stable under production, and resistant/tolerant to biotic and abiotic stresses
  • Develop improved crop and feed resources production management practices, and sustainable natural resource management technologies in an environmentally friendly and conservation based manner
  • Promote improved agricultural technologies “basket of option” to choose the best technology that fits in to the production system of the farming community, and
  • Collect feedback information on technology adoption for further modification, generation and dissemination of more advanced technologies in the two-way communication system.

Research process and Teams

There are 8 research processes and 3 support process which are found in the cente, in total there are 11 functional processes are available at center level.  These are:

Crop research Process: this research processes have three technical teams under it. These teams are

  1. Cereal Research Case team
  2. Pulse and Oil Crops Research Case team
  3. Horticulture and Seed Spices Research case team

Crop protection Research Process:-this is the other research process which comprises of three technical research case teams. These are:

  1. Plant Pathology research case team
  2. Weed Science research case team
  3. Entomology research case team

Livestock research Process: this process has two technical teams:

  1. Animal feeds and nutrition and Range land management research case team
  2. Apiculture Research case team

Natural Research Process:-this research process has also Five (5) technical teams:

  1. Soil Fertility Improvement and Problematic Soil Management Research case Team
  2. Soil and water conservation and   Watershed Management Research case Team
  3. Agro-forestry research Case team
  4. Tree improvement and forest protection case team
  5. Non timber forest case team

Soci-Economics and Research Extension research Process this research process has two research case teams as well

  1. Socio-Economic Research Case team
  2. Agricultural Extension research case team

Coffee and Tea Research Process:-this research process has two functional research case teams under it. These are:

  1. Coffee and tea Improvement Research Case team
  2. Coffee and tea management and protection research case team

Engineering, irrigation water conservation and drainage research case team:

Seed Research and Early generation seed multiplication Research Process:-though these research processes have three research case teams in it among crop seed multiplication research case team is the only functioning so far.

  1. Crop Technology multiplication case team
  2. Livestock technology multiplication case team
  3. Natural Resource technology multiplication case team
