Oil crops: Sunflower, sesame, linseed, and rapeseed are among the main oil crops grown in this country. This category of crops makes a substantial contribution to the country's export revenue.
Seed spices: high-value crops grown in some pocket locations are known as seed spices, and they include fenugreek, coriander, white cumin, and black cumin.
Horticultural crops: these include fruits such as banana, mango, papaya, and avocado, as well as roots and tubers such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, and cassava. Vegetables include peppers, cabbage, tomatoes, onions, and garlic. A variety of fruits and other horticulture commodities can also be used to generate foreign currency.
Research Centers engaged in crops research
There are ten research centers working on improving crop productivity. The research facilities are spread across the region's many agro-ecologies, from the high potential areas for crop production to the pastoral, arid parts of the Borana Zone. Nearly all main food crops, especially those that can guarantee food security, are addressed with these centers in order to improve and subsequently increase productivity and production.
Bako Agricultural Research Center
The Bako Agricultural Research Center is situated 4 kilometers from the route leading to Nekemte town in western Ethiopia, 8 kilometers from the closest town, Bako, and 258 kilometers west of the country's capital, Addis Ababa. At 1650 masl, BARC is located between 906 degrees North latitude and 3709 degrees East longitude. Mid-altitude, hot, humid climate with high rainfall (1238 mm year-1) and maximum annual temperature of 280C is associated with its agro-ecology. The total area of BARC is 1440 hectares. The majority of the land area—66.5%—was set aside for animal greening, natural and artificial forests, and experimentation. The other 10% was designated for residential, research buildings, management offices, laboratories, libraries, and recreation facilities. The remaining 22.5% was set up for seed multiplication and experimentation.
Sinana Agricultural Research Center
The Sinana Agricultural Research Center is located 463 kilometers from Finfinne (Addis Ababa) in the Bale zone of the Oromia region. Its coordinates are 40010'E longitude and 07007'N latitude. With a moderate slope plain topography and an altitude of 2400 masl, the center offers a picturesque view and ideal circumstances for an agricultural production system by rain-fed given the current climate. This facility, which is situated in Ethiopia's wheat-belt, is greatly advancing the development of oil crops, horticultural crops, highland pulses, and small cereals.
Adami Tulu Agricultural Research Center
The average rainfall at ATARC, which was situated 167 kilometers from Addis Ababa/Finfinne East of the nation, was 760 mm. The center was accessible via an asphalt road leading to Awassa. Its elevation is 1650 masl, and its average temperature is 220C. It is the responsibility of this center to release crop technologies appropriate for low moisture areas.
