The Oromia Agricultural Research Institute (IQQO) and the Bio and Emerging Technology Institute (BETin) have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening agricultural research, biotechnology innovation, and capacity building. The MoU was signed by IQQO Director General Mr. Teshome Bogale and BETin Director General Professor Kassahun Tesfaye.

The collaboration focuses on joint research, technology transfer, and human skill capacity building as well as seeking external funding, with the goal of enhancing agricultural productivity and sustainability. The agreement also includes research resource sharing, including physical assets such as laboratories and human capital, as well as holding joint training.

At the ceremony, Mr. Teshome Bogale, Director General of IQQO, said the MoU is an important step in making the longstanding partnership official and preserving the achievements of both institutions for the future. He also highlighted how working together will help researchers from both institutes share resources and knowledge, improve agricultural research regionally and nationally, and support the goal of prosperity. He also recognized and appreciated BETin’s significant achievement.

BETin Director General Prof. Kassahun Tasfayee emphasized the strong collaboration between the two Institutes and outlined major collaborative projects at IQQO centers, including the Spirulina project in Adami Tulluu, recognized as a pioneering national effort, and the Barley Project at Sinana. He also boldly noted future collaboration on research resource sharing, including physical assets such as laboratories and human capital, as well as holding joint training.

Dr. Abera Deresa, an advisor at IQQO, appreciated BETin’s research achievements and encouraged both Institutes to develop their innovations from the ground up to support national economic growth and benefit the wider society.

This MoU marks an important step in advancing collaborative research in agricultural biotechnology to address modern agricultural challenges and support sustainable growth and national development.
